OUR VALUES:

How Do We Do What We Do?

In the Ojibwe and Anishinaabe tradition, Seven Grandfathers were given the responsibility by the Creator to watch over the people living on earth. They gave the people seven teachings that would show them the way to live in harmony and spirituality with Mother Earth.

According to the Anishinaabe tradition, each of the seven principles must be observed together because one cannot have Wisdom without Love, Respect, Bravery, Honesty, Humility, and Truth.

Following these teachings, PACE at Algoma University is committed to pursuing reconciliation and healing in Canada by learning from each other in line with the vision of Chief Shingwaukonse and the Teaching Wigwam concept.

These teachings epitomize the Anishinaabe character and have ensured the survival of the Nation. Today, these principles are the pillars of PACE at Algoma for sharing knowledge across cultures and generations:

  • RESPECT, to have honour for all of Creation.
  • WISDOM, to cherish knowledge is to have wisdom.
  • HUMILITY, to know humility is to know yourself as a sacred part of creation.
  • BRAVERY, to be able to face the foe with integrity.
  • HONESTY, to be honest in facing a situation.
  • TRUTH, to have the truth is to know all of these things.
  • LOVE, to know love is to know peace.
